Low-temperature service requirements

Cryogenic Ball Valves

Cryogenic ball valve selection requires a defined minimum design temperature, medium, pressure and installation arrangement. Body material selection and extended-bonnet details should be reviewed as part of the full valve specification.

Technical buying guidance

Minimum design temperature

State design temperature, operating temperature and relevant pressure-temperature conditions. “Cryogenic” alone is not an adequate material or design requirement.

Bonnet and stem extension

The extension arrangement depends on insulation requirements, valve orientation and the need to keep stem packing away from cold zones. Dimensions must follow project drawings.

Seals and testing

Seat and stem seal materials must be suitable for the specified temperature and cycling duty. Define any required low-temperature testing and leakage requirements.

Materials and documents

Check pressure shell material, trim, bolting, seat and packing; obtain approved drawings and testing procedures before fabrication.

Material grades, pressure classes, valve dimensions, tests and certification requirements must be confirmed for the actual offered configuration. No stock status or certification is implied by this page.

Frequently asked questions

Does a cryogenic ball valve always need a bonnet extension?

The requirement depends on the service temperature, installation, applicable standard and project design.

Is F316 automatically suitable for every cryogenic application?

No. Suitability depends on the complete component specification and required testing.

What to include in your valve RFQ

Provide the minimum design temperature, medium, pressure class, cold-box arrangement and bonnet extension requirements.

Confirm whether an extended bonnet, vented ball, cavity pressure relief and direction-of-installation marking are required by the project specification.

Request low-temperature material traceability, testing scope, seat performance criteria and insulation interface dimensions.
