Actuator selection across valve designs

Actuated Ball Valves

Automating a ball valve requires more than selecting a powered operator. Valve torque, duty cycle, control philosophy, power availability and fail-safe requirements drive actuator selection.

Technical buying guidance

Pneumatic operation

Specify supply pressure, double acting or spring return function, solenoids, position switches, partial-stroke or ESD requirements and control signals.

Electric operation

Specify supply voltage, power frequency, modulating or on/off duty, enclosure rating, hazardous-area needs, local/remote controls and travel time.

Hydraulic operation

Specify available hydraulic power, actuator torque requirement, fail position, operating time and site conditions. Hydraulic automation is especially application-specific.

Mounting and verification

Request opening, running and closing torque, actuator sizing factor, ISO 5211 or project-specific mounting, coupling drawings and a complete control package description.

Material grades, pressure classes, valve dimensions, tests and certification requirements must be confirmed for the actual offered configuration. No stock status or certification is implied by this page.

Frequently asked questions

Can one actuator be selected from valve size alone?

No. Torque and operating conditions are required.

Should an ESD actuator be specified by fail position?

Yes. Provide the required failure response, utilities, timing and control philosophy.

What to include in your valve RFQ

Provide operating differential pressure, required fail position, plant air or electrical supply and control system interface.

Actuator sizing requires valve torque data across the full stroke, safety factor, cycle time and mounting interface such as ISO 5211 where applicable.

Define positioner, limit switches, solenoid valves, enclosure rating and hazardous-area certification only where specified in the project RFQ.
