ASTM A105 forged carbon steel body requests

A105 Forged Steel Ball Valves

A105 is used for forged carbon steel piping components, including suitable valve body construction. A105 is not a valve style: the same grade may be requested for floating or trunnion designs.

Technical buying guidance

Forged A105 versus cast WCB

ASTM A105 describes a forged product specification. ASTM A216 WCB describes a casting material. A buyer requesting forged A105 should not automatically receive a WCB casting as an equivalent.

Where it fits in a ball valve RFQ

Define whether the valve is floating or trunnion mounted, the nominal bore, pressure class, full/reduced port, pressure-temperature requirements, ends, trim and seat type.

Related grade terminology

A105N often indicates an A105 material supplied in a normalized condition, where applicable. Heat treatment and documentation must match the actual purchase specification.

What to confirm

For project orders, request applicable material certificates, supplementary impact tests if required, sour-service requirements where relevant and traceability.

Material grades, pressure classes, valve dimensions, tests and certification requirements must be confirmed for the actual offered configuration. No stock status or certification is implied by this page.

Frequently asked questions

Does A105 specify the ball and seat material?

No. A105 usually identifies a carbon steel body or other pressure-containing forged component; ball, stem and seat materials must be defined separately.

Can I order A105 as a cast steel body?

A105 refers to forging; use the appropriate casting specification for a cast body.

What to include in your valve RFQ

Material selection must follow the process medium, temperature, pressure boundary product form and project corrosion criteria.

Please specify the exact ASTM/ASME or UNS grade for body and trim separately, and whether material testing, PMI or EN 10204 documentation is required.

Availability, suitability and inspection scope are confirmed during review of the complete valve datasheet.
