Metal-to-metal sealing for demanding duty

Metal Seated Ball Valves

Metal seated refers to the ball and seat sealing surfaces. It is not a substitute for identifying whether the valve is floating, trunnion mounted or top entry. Seat coatings, hardness and leakage performance must be specified for the actual fluid and duty.

Technical buying guidance

Metal-to-metal seat design

Specify ball and seat base materials, hardfacing or coating, surface finishing and seat loading philosophy. A metal seat does not automatically guarantee zero leakage or universal slurry suitability.

Abrasive and high-temperature duty

For slurry, identify solid type, particle size, solids concentration, velocity, cycling frequency and risk of material accumulation. For elevated temperatures, confirm thermal expansion, differential pressure and required shutoff standard.

Coating and seat materials

Where applicable, a technical review may compare tungsten carbide, chromium carbide, Stellite-type hardfacing and other engineered surfaces. Final coating selection requires the service conditions and a verified manufacturer design.

Acceptance and testing

State requested leakage acceptance criteria, test procedure, body test and seat test conditions. Never infer a leakage class solely from “metal seated.”

Material grades, pressure classes, valve dimensions, tests and certification requirements must be confirmed for the actual offered configuration. No stock status or certification is implied by this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a metal seated valve always trunnion mounted?

No. Metal seated refers to sealing surfaces and can be combined with different constructions.

Can a metal seated valve handle slurry?

Suitability depends on the actual valve cavities, solids characteristics, flushing provisions, coatings and operating duty.

What to include in your valve RFQ

For metal seated ball valve enquiries, specify nominal size, pressure class, end connection, design temperature, fluid composition, required leakage performance and actuation.

Engineering review should also address seat and ball hardfacing, coating compatibility, differential pressure, abrasive particles, leakage class and operating torque. Metal seating is not a substitute for confirming actual process solids, cycle frequency and shutoff requirements.

Attach the project valve datasheet, P&ID where relevant, inspection and testing requirements, and any applicable material certificates. Final configuration is agreed during technical review.
